Background: My origins are multicultural. I was born in Lebanon, I am originally from Egypt, and I am citizen of Saudi Arabia. I speak Arabic, English, and French. My work is multidisciplinary, combining Architecture and Software development. My PhD is in Computational Design from the School of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University. I focused on “Computational Representations for Design Exploration”. My BS is in Interior Architecture from King Faisal University in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Approach: I have been designing Abstract Arabic Calligraphy as a hobby since 1993. I use a unique approach that combines the traditional Arabic language with the universal language of geometry. I transform letters into abstractions thus blending the cultural with the international. My approach, which brings a visual dimension to words and a conceptual dimension to images, is influenced by my Architectural Design training. The fluidity of the Arabic script allows me to explore limitless visions for the meaningful words and phrases that inspire me. Every design is an intellectual challenge… A spiritual journey.... Reactions: I am always intrigued by the reaction of viewers, especially those who are not familiar with the Arabic language. My calligraphy artwork inspires them to stop and reflect upon the composition as they unravel the mystery of the hidden word. While they solve a puzzle and uncover a message, viewers are captivated by the visual appeal of the composition and attracted to the underlying meaning. As they inquire about the meaning, the language, the culture, and the technique, their preconceived notions are altered and their comprehension deepens. Award: In 2004, I received the Akram Midani Award for promoting International Understanding through my Artwork. Vision: My vision is to share my unique artwork with the world. | ||||
